What is your hobby?

One of my favorite pastimes has always been cooking. When I was younger, I was interested in it but never took the time to learn or do anything. In my formative years it was not something I even noticed myself doing, but I always gravitated to helping out in the kitchen. It is fun learning new things. Somehow I got away from it for a while, fortunate to have a lot of great options nearby. Last year, I had more free time during the lockdown and decided to give cooking for myself more often a chance.

How did you get started with this hobby?

My family always cooked when I was a kid, especially my mother, and I guess it stuck with me. I’ve been using a lot of recipes she made when I was younger, and I’m also learning new ones. The pandemic gave me a lot of opportunities to work on my skills at home. The internet has endless ideas for trying new dishes out. Each week a take on something new. I plan ahead of time to make sure that I have enough time to do the proper preparation.

Tell us what you love about your hobby.

Cooking for my friends and family is a great feeling. There’s nothing better than sitting down with the people I care about and enjoying a meal I invested hours making. It is fulfilling for my bubble to be able to connect over a home cooked meal that I made.

What types of things/equipment have you spent money on for your hobby?

I recently spent a good amount of money on various kitchen appliances like pots, pans, and miscellaneous items that make cooking easier. You don’t need to spend a fortune to be a master chef. A Chef’s Knife Roll Up Storage Bag is on my wish list, but that is not a must have for my level of expertise. Anyone can have a properly outfitted kitchen for a reasonable price.

What are some of your favorite places to shop for your hobby?

Shopping online is my primary option, mostly on Amazon. I can get anything I need for a good price. The whole store is at my fingertips, way easier than going into appliance stores and browsing up and down the aisles aimlessly. When it comes to ingredients for meals, I am fortunate to have a great market and a local butcher nearby.

How much money have you invested into this? How much would a beginner have to invest to get started?

Within the last year, I have spent a decent amount of money. Not too much while at the same time not being cheap. Someone who is just getting started can initially invest a few hundred dollars to get whatever they need.

Are there any good books for beginners?

It’s impossible to recommend a specific book, there are so many. Anyone can find a book that speaks to them about any type of cuisine. The Flavour Bible is one I bought last year that has aided my growth.

Are there any online videos you recommend to help beginners?

There are countless videos online for every type of cooking. Anything you have a problem with or need a recipe, there is a video for it. I have primarily been watching videos on YouTube that discuss essential tips and skills.

How has your hobby changed your life?

Cooking as a hobby has helped me become more self-reliant. I hardly order take out anymore. It’s more satisfying to sit down and enjoy something you spent time making.

What advice do you have for others starting out with this hobby?

Have fun, and don’t panic if things don’t turn out as expected. Cooking is a trial and error process. It won’t be picture perfect on the first try. Persistence is key. Avid learners like myself can really get lost in it, but you just have to start with something simple and you might get hooked like me.
